"I'm not sure when it happened, but at some point in my life I was struck by the morbid quality of some of the images used in Christianity. And I guess I never got over it. It wasn't until adulthood that I became aware of the existence of stigmatists, people who reportedly carry the wounds of Jesus on their hands, feet, sides and foreheads. This idea fascinated me; that people can be so involved in their beliefs that they physically manifest symptoms of crucifixion. Call it morbid fascination, if you will, but I am definitely fascinated. While it may be unlikely that these people experience the ecstasy I would like to think they do, they certainly inspire awe and wonder in me."
